No stranger to major healthcare improvement projects, Linear Projects recently completed a £4m project to relocate and re-provide services from the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service and the Department of Clinical Neurosciences in a single building adjoining the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh at Little France.
Edinburgh’s Sick Kids hospital has been a healthcare institution in Scotland for 150 years and this was a significant development which would shape its future. The major project involved the design, build, finance and maintenance of a new facility to re-provide these essential services to improve and strengthen the overall patient experience and environment.
Linear Projects was initially engaged by Multiplex to provide a bespoke solution incorporating over 40,000m² of suspended and plasterboard ceilings, including associated BWICS, bulkheads, perimeter strips and taping and filling to plasterboard areas. Following an unfortunate and significant flood, the team worked in partnership with Multiplex to provide significantly increased labour at short notice to repair the damaged partitions, doors, ceilings, including all BWICS and leadworks to bring the project back on track and enable final completion.
Scott Paterson, Group Commercial Director, said, “The Sick Kids has played a huge role in healthcare provision for children and young people for such a long time that this project represented a major change, but all to enable improved provision. Working closely in partnership with Multiplex, we were able to ensure we consistently delivered throughout the project and were able to provide additional support when unforeseen issues arose.”
