Established in 1828, Merchiston School is a leading independent boarding school for boys situated in the Colinton area of Edinburgh. Within its grounds it has both academic and residential accommodation for pupils, the latter of which recently underwent a major refurbishment by Linear Design & Construct.
The team at LDC were appointed in March 2022 to deliver a two 2 stage full refurbishment of the East and West Wing of the Chalmers Building. The contract involved works to strip, replace, upgrade and fit out the residential blocks for the boarding pupils. The works included down takings, structural works to form new rooms, new floors, wall and ceiling finishes, as well as a full FF&E fit out with bespoke joinery, M&E replacement and upgrade and works to the external courtyard.
The properties undergoing the refurbishment were constructed in 1929 and as such, were B Listed, therefore required extensive surveys throughout the pre-construction period for M&E, dilapidations, fire protection and demolition. Due to the school being in session throughout the works, a large majority of pupils were in residence which required the team to ensure their safety and security as the utmost priority.
Ryan Broadley, Managing Director, LDC Scotland, said, “Working on such a prestigious Edinburgh educational institution to enhance their facilities for students, is a real privilege for our team and we’re delighted to have handed this over successfully on time. This project further cements our specialist expertise in the student residence and education sectors and also with listed buildings which require sensitive and detailed handling. Well done to the team for another impressive completion.”
The works were successfully completed on time and handed over in time for the new term starting.
