Learning Teaching Hub and Boyd Orr Building, University of Glasgow

In 2018, The University of Glasgow unveiled its plans for a £1billion expansion programme, making it one of the largest infrastructure projects in Scotland’s history. The vision was to create a world class modern campus with vibrant mix of teaching, research and community spaces for the 21st Century.

Linear Projects were appointed by main contractor Multiplex to provide fit out expertise across within the development programme, providing the brand new Learning & Teaching Hub and the refurbishment of the existing Boyd Orr Building.

Working in partnership with Multiplex, the Linear team have been engaged in an extensive package of works at the Learning & Teaching Hub extending to SFS, Dry Lining, Suspended Ceilings, Acoustic Treatment, Doors and Joinery. The refurbishment of the Boyd Orr Building has seen a full fit out, excluding M&E works, and has involved considerable upgrading of the facilities and finishes.

Home to over 2,500 students, the new £90.6m, 8-storey Learning & Teaching Hub (James McCune Smith Learning Hub) provides a 500-capacity lecture theatre, offering high-quality conference venue facilities. For this project, the fit out package included the installation of a 26 metre curved feature wall at a 10° slope, IPS integrated into the toilet areas, GRG columns and smoke curtains. Designed in 1964, the Boyd Orr building began life as a general science building and has become a key part of the fabric of the University.

The current refurbishment will see significant upgrading to the revised toilet locations, improved fire doors to escape stairwells, installation of protection fire tunnels and work on the new link bridge walkthrough areas.
